Here’s the NJ State Fall Foliage Forecast…and while many of the parks within the Ocean County Parks and Recreation system are set deep in the pines, there are hardwoods mixed in all over. Some of the views easiest to access are at Wells Mills, Lake Shenandoah and Jakes Branch County Parks. but they will all offer some color in the coming weeks. The map attached here will give you an idea if you venture elsewhere in the state.

4 – H & Ocean County !
Ocean County 4-H (rutgers.edu)
The 4-H Youth Development program offers a variety of opportunities for young people. Beginning in Kindergarten through grade 13 (one year out of high school), youth participate in activities, competitions, workshops, and conferences that help them grow into caring, contributing, and confident adults. 4-H was founded in 1902 with the purpose of instructing rural youth in improved farming. By the 1970’s, it broadened its goals to cover a full range of youth projects. Today 4-H serves youth in rural, urban, and suburban communities in every county in every state across the nation reaching 6+ million youth!
Have an idea for a Traditional or S.T.E.P 4-H Club?
4-H staff would be happy to work with you to make this become a reality!
A 4-H club meeting usually includes fun activities, educational opportunities, and a business meeting. 4-H
clubs also get involved in community service through activities like beach clean ups, assisting with local food
pantries, working with community partners, and more. This emphasis on developing youth in leadership
roles is an integral part of 4-H and is why 4-H alumni include many of our nation’s top leaders.
What is 4-H?
The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. 4-H is a dynamic, informal,
educational program for youth. Its programs reach over 6 million young people across the United States.
4-H programs assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills and forming attitudes that will enable
youth to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of the world.
What makes 4-H unique?
4-H makes learning fun! In 4-H clubs young people work with peers and adult volunteers to learn new skills,
practice leadership, give back to their community, and make new friends. They learn about topics that interest
them through hands-on activities. We believe in learning by doing.
4-H members select one or more topics to learn about during the year. That includes everything from learning
how to cook, caring for an animal, helping the environment, and much more. These topics are referred to as
“projects.” Hundreds of projects are offered through 4-H so members can pick the ones that most interests
them.
The 4-H Pledge is a symbol of the devotion generations of youth that have given to the 4-H program. Its words
embody the goals of 4-H.
We are eager to work with you to find the right club or to start a brand new one!

National Peach Month!
August is National Peach Month!
“Thanks to our Garden State farmers, we can enjoy fresh-from-the-fields food all year long as the seasons unfold. But, still…
There is no better time than NOW to enjoy Jersey Fresh produce at its best. As we near the peak of August, the options and availability of good food are mind-boggling. Jersey’s legendary tomatoes, corn, peaches, berries, eggplant and so much more are piled high at farmers’ markets, farm stands and local markets statewide.
Many events are also happening now to celebrate the edible bounty of high summer. ” Home jersey | Edible Jersey (ediblecommunities.com)

“Paddle for the Edge” Volunteers Needed
It’s that time of year again! The Barnegat Bay Partnership will be holding its annual Paddle for the Edge shoreline survey from July 2nd to July 31st.
Paddle for the Edge is a data collection event driven by volunteer kayakers, canoeists, and stand-up paddle boarders. Interested volunteers will be trained in basic wetlands science via a training video and manual. During the survey time frame, volunteers will paddle out to their assigned section of marsh and collect valuable environmental data.
The Paddle for the Edge survey is a great opportunity to get out on the water and also learn some bay science. Since its start in 2015, volunteers have paddled a total of 155 miles of shoreline and collected more than 8,100 data points! The data collected help us monitor shoreline conditions, assess how shorelines change as sea level rises, and identify potential locations for shoreline restoration projects.
If you would like to volunteer, sign up using this link. Please note that you must have your own canoe, kayak, or paddle board to participate. If you have any questions, please visit our website or email Paddle4theEdge@gmail.com.

Ocean County Water Quality Reports
From mid May through Labor Day, the Ocean County Health Department monitors the water quality at public bathing beaches in Ocean County. The salt water sites are sampled every Monday, the fresh water sites are sampled every Tuesday.
Not all beaches may have lifeguards. Please swim only at beaches, which are open with lifeguards. Contact Municipal Offices to find out which beaches are open with lifeguards. Water quality updates can be found on this site, or heard on the Ocean County Health Department Bathing Beach Hotline.
The Ocean County Health Department recommends against swimming for at least 24 hours after a rainfall event at all bay, lake, river and creek bathing beaches. Please check with the municipality for up to the minute status after a rain event.
Even though this web site is not updated on Weekends and Holidays, the hotline is available 24 hours a day and can be reached at 732-341-9700 ext. 7776 in Northern Ocean County and at 800 342-9738 in Southern Ocean County.
