SUMMARY:Invisible and Essential: Learning LGBTQIA+ Histories
DESCRIPTION:For generations\, the stories of LGBTQIA+ individuals have been intentionally suppressed\, making their contributions and lived experiences largely invisible. \nThat is why the Ocean County Library will host “Invisible and Essential: Learning LGBTQIA+ Histories” at several branches this October. \nThe program will take place at the following locations at dates: \nFriday\, October 2 @ 2 p.m. – Brick Branch – 301 Chambers Bridge Road\, 732-477-4513 \nWednesday\, October 14 @ 6 p.m. – Little Egg Harbor Branch – 290 Mathistown Road\, 609-294-1197 \nWednesday\, October 21 @ 6 p.m. – Berkeley Branch – 30 Station Road\, 732-269-2144 \nThis presentation will make the case for why learning this history is not just a matter of curiosity\, but a crucial step toward empathy and connection. \nIt will highlight key moments and figures that have been overlooked and discuss how understanding these historical narratives can foster a more complete and accurate view of the human experience. \nJoin us to learn why this “invisible” history is\, in fact\, absolutely essential. \nKate Okeson\, Director of Youth Equity for the New Jersey Department of Education\, will present the program. \nRegistration is required for this free program. \nTo register\, visit tinyurl.com/InvisibleOCL\, or call or stop by the branch of your choice. \ntinyurl.com/InvisibleOCL

SUMMARY:Meet Local Dystopian Author Kelly Keevins at the Berkeley Library
DESCRIPTION:The Berkeley Branch of the Ocean County Library will host “Meet Local Author Kelly Keevins” at 6 p.m. \nThursday\, October 15. Kelly Keevins is the author of The Cavern\, a dystopian survival novel for teens. \nIt has been five years since biochemical warfare destroyed the world\, five tears since anyone could breathe the air outside of the cavern\, and almost five years since the inhabitants of the cavern have seen any outsiders besides the group known as the Elite\, who allow them to live there. Until Elise shows up. \nElise can’t remember where she came from or how she got here\, and she doesn’t remember the world ending. \nLuckily\, the cavern inhabitants are kind and understanding – except for Angelo\, who thinks she is a spy for the Elite. \nSoon Elise becomes enmeshed in cavern living and indispensable to those around her\, but Angelo can’t help but wonder if she knows more than she is letting on. \nA dystopian young adult novel\, The Cavern explores questions of hope\, love\, and survival at the world’s end. \nThe branch is located at 30 Station Road\, 732-269-2144. \nRegistration is not required for this free program. \nOcean County Library cardholders can borrow The Cavern for free. \nVisit tinyurl.com/CavernOCL\, or call or stop by your local OCL branch to request a copy today.
