DESCRIPTION:General John Lacey and the Battle of the Crooked Billet \nSunday\, May 10\, 2026\, at 2:00 PM \nRenowned historian Scott Randolph will tell us how General John Lacey became a hero during the Battle of the Crooked Billet. \nRandolph will discuss the General’s ties to Lacey Township\, named after him. \nHe will also discuss the brutal atrocities committed under British Major John Graves Simcoe. (Simcoe is featured in the TV mini-series\, “Turn.”) \nScott has worked in radio\, film\, and television for over 30 years. \nHe was an on-air talent for WJJZ Philadelphia\, 92 5XTU Philadelphia Atlantic City\, and WHWH Princeton. \nIn his TV career he directed “Christina Cook” on PBS for over 10 years and was the director of “Comcast Newsmakers” for 15 years. \nHe produced and directed the award-winning documentary\, “The Battle of the Crooked Billet\,” which premiered at Valley Forge National Park. \nThis event takes place at our museum at 26 Hadley Avenue in Toms River. Back in 2020\, TJ was furloughed from work at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. He decided to spend that time traveling the nation\, visiting the gravesites of former presidents\, vice presidents\, signers of the Declaration of Independence and baseball Hall of Famers. To accomplish this feat\, he traveled more than 20\,000 miles through thirty-three states. DESCRIPTION:Old Methodist Cemetery — presented by Joseph Latshaw \nJoin us for a presentation by Joseph Latshaw about the historic Old Methodist Cemetery\, located at the corner of Hooper Avenue and Washington Street in Toms River. \nThis Power Point presentation will include a brief history of 19th Century Toms River\, the emergence of Methodism\, the identity of military veterans interred at the cemetery dating back to the American Revolution\, the meaning of some of the symbols on certain gravestones\, and much more. Joseph will also discuss preservation efforts for the two-hundred-year-old cemetery. \nJoseph is the historian for the First United Methodist Church of Toms River\, which oversees and manages the Old Methodist Cemetery. \nA lifelong resident of Toms River\, he has a degree in history from Kean University. \nJoseph is currently employed by the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission. \nIn addition\, he is a President of the Ocean County Historical Society. He also serves as Chair of the Toms River Township Historic Preservation Commission and is a trustee for the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey.
