๐ขBe on the lookout for sea turtles in distress! ๐ข
We have entered a critical time of year for sea turtles who may still be in our waters. In water temperatures below 55 degrees, a sea turtle’s metabolism slows down considerably, and they become immobile, appearing deceased. This condition is known as cold-stunning. With prolonged exposure a sea turtle becomes more debilitated, impacting organ function and the immune system.
YOU can help sea turtles by keeping an eye out for sea turtles stranded on the beach, floating immobile in the water, or entangled at sea.
1. Keep the MMSC 24-hour hotline 609-266-0538 and Sea Turtle Recovery hotline (609) 667-4076 saved in your cellphone. Immediately call so that these two authorized agencies can coordinate getting the sea turtle the emergency help it needs. If you are on a boat and do not have cell service, radio the USCG on VHF channel 16 to relay your report.
2. Cold-stunning can make it very difficult to tell if a sea turtle is alive or dead, so please STILL CALL even if you think the animal is deceased.
3. Do NOT attempt to warm the turtle up, move it, or disentangle it on your own- you may end up doing more harm than good. When you call you will be given further instructions from MMSC and STR.
Please share this post so more people will know what to do should they encounter a sea turtle in distress. Thank you for helping us keep an eye out for sea turtles in need of help! ๐ข

On December 14, 2024 at 12:00 pm, NJ0149 – St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleum will be helping St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleums to Remember and Honor our veterans by laying Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes.
Please help us honor and remember as many fallen heroes as possible by sponsoring remembrance wreaths, volunteering on Wreaths Day, or inviting your family and friends to attend with you.

The open house will start at 1:00 pm. There are demonstrations planned along with an award ceremony for all the winners of the Eagleswood Elementary School Poster Contest. ๐
Later in the evening between 6:00 – 9:00 PM, we are hosting a community bonfire in the field behind the firehouse where you can enjoy some hot chocolate with the firefighters. There will also be pumpkins available to purchase. This is a family friendly event and alcohol is not permitted on the premises. ๐ฅ

What was it like to be disabled before curb cuts and accessible restrooms? How did disabled people access the world? Why is it important to care? In observance of Diversability Month, Public Historian Nicole Belolan will offer facts and evidence during โDisabilities Then, Disabilities Nowโ at the Ocean County Library Lacey Branch, 6:30 PM Tuesday, October 15.
Disability affects everyone at some point in life. Exploring artifacts from the historianโs collection, youโll gain insight about the meaning of being disabled in the 18th and 19th-centuries and youโll achieve awareness of disability activism and justice in America today.
South Jersey-based Nicole Belolan is a consulting public historian and independent scholar. Her expertise has been called on for projects such as oral history, collections management, and disability history interpretation. She holds a seat on the Board of the Disability History Association and occasionally serves as an adjunct instructor.
Nicole regularly stages workshops about access and inclusion for people with disabilities in public history and humanities settings. Her written works have appeared in venues including Winterthur Portfolio and The Inclusive Historianโs Handbook.
