” April Fools’ Day—occurring on April 1 each year—has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, though its exact origins remain a mystery. April Fools’ Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools!” at the end to clue in the subject of the April Fools’ Day prank. While its exact history is shrouded in mystery, the embrace of April Fools’ Day jokes by the media and major brands has ensured the unofficial holiday’s long life. ” April Fools’ Day: Origins, Meaning & Hoaxes | HISTORY

Today is National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day! Today & every day we celebrate all of our Ocean County “Mom & Pop’ Businesses!

Meet The Shoemaker Family of Lavallette Hardware located in Lavallette!
The Shoemaker Family has been in the hardware business in one way or another for years. The passion began in the 1960’s when Bob, started at a hardware store in Ridgewood & eventually working as a hardware distributor. Bob’s son began working at the hardware store in 1994.
What brought the family & business to Ocean County?
The family had a summer home in Lavallette, and in 2001 purchased @Lavallette Hardware, they relocated full time to Lavallette which made perfect sense as they started their new venture & the rest is history!
The family says that the best part of being a ” Mom & Pop” Business is, is getting to know their community & locals. They have the ability to cater to the needs and issues of the small island community. It gives them the ability to specialize in items that are needed locally which sets them apart from the big box retailers.
On any given day, you can see Bob, Betty, Randy, & family working hard at the store that so many have come to love.
What does the family love about Ocean County?
The family history in Ocean County is almost 100 years! Since the 1930’s! Randy added, ” My grandmother’s family had a place in Seaside Heights. my father has been coming to Lavallette since he was a child and my mother’s family has ties to Ocean Grove, and I have been coming here since I was born.”
The family is always willing to support the community & local grade school too!
Just one of the many reasons to #shopsmallbusiness
Did you know that small businesses donate 250% more than large businesses to local nonprofits and community causes, creating a positive cycle of giving back locally.
Thank you for sharing your story with Ocean County Tourism ! Get out there and #supportlocal !
Happy National Mom & Pop Business Owners! You are the backbone to our community!

New Funding Opportunity for Small Business Innovation Research Program Phase II
Deadline to apply: Tuesday, March 5, 2024
ACL’s National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) is announcing a new funding opportunity for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.
The purpose of the federal SBIR program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector, strengthen the role of small business in meeting federal research or research and development (R&D) needs, and improve the return on investment from federally funded research for economic and social benefits to the nation. NIDILRR’s SBIR program goal is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through R&D products generated by small businesses and to increase the commercial application of NIDILRR-supported research results and R&D products. All SBIR projects funded by NIDILRR must address the needs of individuals with disabilities and promote their health and function, community living, or employment outcomes.
The objective of Phase II is to continue the research or R&D effort initiated in Phase I with approaches that exhibit potential for commercial application. SBIR Phase I grantees who successfully completed their Phase I grant in fiscal years 2022, 2023, or 2024 are eligible to apply. Phase I grantees with funding from NIDILRR or another agency are eligible to apply as long as their applications describe research projects that aim to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Applicants must also continue to meet the criteria of small business concerns. Phase II awards are for periods up to two years.
