SUMMARY:Summer S.T.E.A.M. in the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Looking for kids summer activities on LBI? \nThe Long Beach Island Historical Association Museum has a Makerspace program for kids\, 5 – 12 years of age. \nThe morning incorporates STEAM activities with historical artifacts from the Museum. \nMondays in July & August @ 10:00am \nEach week\, a new design challenge is presented to the kids and their parents. \nIt’s truly a family affair where problem-solving becomes the key to having fun and learning through STEAM activities. \nJuly 6th – Challenge:  Build a Paper Bridge \nLearn about compression and tension and the effects of both when building a bridge. \nJuly 13th – Challenge: Lighthouses on the Jersey Shore \nDiscover the problems encountered by ships at sea\, then build a lighthouse using materials found around the house. \nJuly 20th – Challenge: Breaches Buoy Challenge \nLearn how\, in the early days\, lives were saved from doomed ships using lines that were shot from shore to ship so that passengers and sailors could follow the line to safety. \nJuly 27th – Challenge: \nBoats that Float – Learn about the early fishermen on LBI and pound fishing. Kids will discover what makes a boat float and design their own boats with bouys. \nAugust 3rd Challenge: Anchor & Mooring \nThe kids will tour the museum\, inside and out\, to see and learn the different types of anchors\, then they will be tasked with making their own chain from one piece of paper and using their ingenuity to make it the longest possible chain! \nAugust 10th \nChallenge: Communication is Key \nIn the earliest days of the telephone\, people couldn’t dial one another directly.  Students investigate how sound travels through a string and air. They will be challenged to redesign the string telephone for distance. \nAugust 17th \nChallenge: Wind Powered Vehicle Challenge The earliest sailboats were no more complicated than hoisting a bed sheet on a pole and letting the wind do all the work. \nBut what happens if you want to go in a different direction than the wind is blowing? \nEveryone will explore wind power and build vehicles that sail with the wind. \nAugust 24th \nChallenge: Egg Drop Challenge \nIn this activity\, the kids will tour the museum with a focus on natural disasters that have impacted LBI. \nThey will learn about the change from potential energy to kinetic energy and the energy transfer that occurs on impact. \nUsing engineering design\, the kids will design\, create\, and test a device that will prevent a raw egg from breaking when dropped from a specific height. \nhttps://www.lbihistoricalmuseum.org/kids-summer-activities-lbi \nlbimuseumevents@gmail.com \n609-494-0070
