SUMMARY:The Outcrops
DESCRIPTION:The Outcrops were named “NJ Band of the Year” (‘The Aquarian\, 2020) for “three reasons: a work ethic that makes them one of the Dirty Jerz’s hardest-working bands\, guitar-playing that fuses the sounds of Duane Allman and Jerry Garcia\, and a refreshing fusion of roots\, soul\, blues\, funk\, and psychedelic rock that sounds wholly new while comfortably familiar.” \nThey have dug their roots into the music of rock’n’roll\, blues\, jazz\, funk\, folk\, and soul legends\, choosing B-side tunes to put their own spin on. \nWithin their show\, they may pay homage to bands such as the Grateful Dead & the Band\, or artists such as BB King & Aretha Franklin. \nTheir original music stems from that same soulful soil\, ranging from gritty blues to upbeat Americana.

SUMMARY:Drawing with Joseph Rogine
DESCRIPTION:1:00 PM – 3:00 PM \nThis class is being offered to ages 12 and up! \n$20.00 for members per class \n$25.00 for non members per class \nInstructor: Joseph Rogine \nThese classes are designed for both beginning to advanced students who want to sharpen their skills in drawing. \nI have taught students for over 25 years who have never picked up a pencil to draw to those who have been quite advanced. \nIt is an academic course\, (academic being defined as that which can be taught). \nDrawings are created by copying master drawings\, simple to complex still-life objects and classical plaster casts. The student usually begins by copying a master drawing that is supplied to them. \nAll students start out using graphite pencils with grades of 2H HB 2B. \nThe capabilities and limitations of drawing materials and drawing instruments are discussed at length along with their proper handling. \nClasses are essentially about learning how to see nature and the world as an artist sees it\, through the language and medium of drawing. \nThe student’s eye will gradually become trained and sensitive on how to compose a layout on the page\, assessing proportion\, elementary perspective\, gauge angles\, identify shapes\, access the degree of curvature of forms\, locate hidden movements and linear rhythms\, the structure and modeling of form and the study of light and shade. \nThis opens a whole new world towards a visual literacy that was very common in school curricula 100 to 150 years ago. \nDepending on a students’ progress and particular interest repeat students are free to experiment with various drawing mediums like charcoal\, pastel pencil\, pen and ink etc.\, along with the drawing surfaces applicable to their chosen medium. Joseph Rogine supply list 2024. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Joseph Rogine at 732-349-6859\, or by email at info@ocartistsguild.org. SUMMARY:Meet Local Dystopian Author Kelly Keevins at the Berkeley Library
DESCRIPTION:The Berkeley Branch of the Ocean County Library will host “Meet Local Author Kelly Keevins” at 6 p.m. \nThursday\, October 15. Kelly Keevins is the author of The Cavern\, a dystopian survival novel for teens. \nIt has been five years since biochemical warfare destroyed the world\, five tears since anyone could breathe the air outside of the cavern\, and almost five years since the inhabitants of the cavern have seen any outsiders besides the group known as the Elite\, who allow them to live there. Until Elise shows up. \nElise can’t remember where she came from or how she got here\, and she doesn’t remember the world ending. \nLuckily\, the cavern inhabitants are kind and understanding – except for Angelo\, who thinks she is a spy for the Elite. \nSoon Elise becomes enmeshed in cavern living and indispensable to those around her\, but Angelo can’t help but wonder if she knows more than she is letting on. \nA dystopian young adult novel\, The Cavern explores questions of hope\, love\, and survival at the world’s end. \nThe branch is located at 30 Station Road\, 732-269-2144. \nRegistration is not required for this free program. \nOcean County Library cardholders can borrow The Cavern for free. \nVisit tinyurl.com/CavernOCL\, or call or stop by your local OCL branch to request a copy today.

SUMMARY:Veronica Swift
DESCRIPTION:“She has a miraculous voice\, musical ability and technique\, as well as an innate gift for entertaining a crowd.” — Wall Street Journal \nVeronica Swift has established herself as one of her generation’s iconic voices in Jazz. \nThroughout her childhood\, she toured nationally with her parents (Jazz musicians Hod O’Brien and Stephanie Nakasian)\, singing at renowned clubs and festivals such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola\, Jazz Standard (NYC)\, Jazz Showcase (Chicago)\, and Telluride Jazz Festival. \nShe recorded her first album at age nine\, and since then has had a career spanning two decades\, which saw a 2nd place win at The 2015 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition\, a twice-a-year residency at Birdland Jazz Club\, joining Chris Botti’s touring band\, as well as touring with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and recording with Jeff Goldblum. \nHer 2021 album This Bitter Earth received a 5-star review and the cover of DownBeat magazine\, and in 2024\, she was honored with a French knighthood as Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters. \nWhile her first two releases on Mack Avenue cemented her as a master of scat improvisation and programming conceptual song cycles\, her most recent self-titled album (2023) showed us that Swift’s talents and path lie in other directions than just Jazz\, rather theatrical glam rock as seen with her original band DAME\, which she co-founded with The Dresden Dolls’ Brian Viglione. \nSince moving to Los Angeles in 2022\, she has pursued other projects and collaborations in the rock genre with artists like pianist Mike Garson of David Bowie\, Luke Spiller of The Struts\, guitarist John Notto of Dirty Honey\, and The Lemon Twigs. Swift’s expansive artistic voice remains firmly intact regardless of genre. \nShe continues to release Jazz music as Veronica Swift\, as is evident in her 2026 album\, Home\, which will be released in May of this year. \nThe album’s story takes us on Veronica’s journey from growing up on a farm in Greater Appalachian Virginia\, losin \ngrunincenter.org \n732-255-0500
