SUMMARY:Edible History: How Latin American Food Changed the World
DESCRIPTION:Go on a culinary adventure with Edible History: How Latin American Food Changed the World\, \na travelling exhibit by the Newark Public Library’s New Jersey Hispanic Research and Information Center. \nThe exhibit will be available to view from now until September 30 in the atrium of the Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library during the branch’s regular operating hours. \nCan you imagine a world without French fries\, ketchup\, or chocolate? \nNo guacamole or salsa to eat with chips? No beans for “rice and beans?” No corn tortillas for tacos\, no popcorn\, or corn on the cob? \nNo tomato sauce for spaghetti or pizza? No pumpkins for Halloween? No turkey or sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving? \nMany of the foods that are part of our daily lives today were not known in the rest of the world before Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and reached Latin America. \nEdible History takes a deep look at the Latin American origins of chocolate\, quinoa\, tomatoes\, corn\, potatoes\, and peanuts. \nRegistration is not required to view the exhibit. \nFor more information\, call 732-349-6200\, or stop by the branch at 101 Washington Street.

SUMMARY:Nat Adderley\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Nat Adderley\, Jr. spent 25 years as the Music Director for rhythm and blues singer Luther Vandross\, but after Vandross passed away in 2005\, Adderley\, Jr.\, the son of trumpeter Nat Adderley and nephew of alto saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley\, returned to his roots as a jazz pianist\, mixing hard bop with R&B. \nIn October 2025\, Adderley released his first jazz album as a leader Took So Long. \nThe album soared to the top of the JazzWeek charts\, spending six weeks at Number 1. DownBeat Magazine’s Joshua Myers called it “a near perfect mixture of standard jazz tunes and popular musical mainstays.” \nOn September 13\, at the Gia Maione Prima Foundation Studio Theatre\, Adderley\, Jr.\, will be performing selections from Took So Long. \nIn addition to his original title tune\, you’ll hear such songs as Bronislaw Kaper’s “Green Dolphin Street”\, Dizzy Gillespie’s “Con Alma”\, Burton Lane’s “Old Devil Moon”\, and “Superstar”\, written by Leon Russell for The Carpenters\, but memorably recorded by Luther Vandross. \nIn the DownBeat review\, Joshua Myers reminded his readers that\, “It is simply cool to hear once again how interpretations of sounds made famous by Stevie Wonder\, The Stylistics\, and Aretha Franklin beautifully coexist alongside those written by Billie Holiday and Dizzy Gillespie. \nMasters of the piano format have gamely plumbed these associations before. But in the hands of Nat Adderley\, Jr.\, we get yet another fresh look.” \nTook So Long was selected as WBGO Radio’s “New Day\, New Play” album in October 2025. \nThe station’s morning host\, Gary Walker\, pointed out that\, “There are reimagined standards\, an original\, and a fabulous recollection of his dear friend Luther Vandross on ‘Superstar’. \nIt might have taken so long\, but it has been well worth it.” \ngrunincenter.org \n732-255-0500

SUMMARY:Drawing with Joseph Rogine
DESCRIPTION:1:00 PM – 3:00 PM \nThis class is being offered to ages 12 and up! \n$20.00 for members per class $25.00 for non members per class \nInstructor: Joseph Rogine \nThese classes are designed for both beginning to advanced students who want to sharpen their skills in drawing. \nI have taught students for over 25 years who have never picked up a pencil to draw to those who have been quite advanced. \nIt is an academic course\, (academic being defined as that which can be taught). \nDrawings are created by copying master drawings\, simple to complex still-life objects and classical plaster casts. The student usually begins by copying a master drawing that is supplied to them. \nAll students start out using graphite pencils with grades of 2H HB 2B. \nThe capabilities and limitations of drawing materials and drawing instruments are discussed at length along with their proper handling. Classes are essentially about learning how to see nature and the world as an artist sees it\, through the language and medium of drawing. \nThe student’s eye will gradually become trained and sensitive on how to compose a layout on the page\, assessing proportion\, elementary perspective\, gauge angles\, identify shapes\, access the degree of curvature of forms\, locate hidden movements and linear rhythms\, the structure and modeling of form and the study of light and shade. \nThis opens a whole new world towards a visual literacy that was very common in school curricula 100 to 150 years ago. \nDepending on a students’ progress and particular interest repeat students are free to experiment with various drawing mediums like charcoal\, pastel pencil\, pen and ink etc.\, along with the drawing surfaces applicable to their chosen medium. Joseph Rogine supply list 2024. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Joseph Rogine at 732-349-6859\, or by email at info@ocartistsguild.org.
