DESCRIPTION:Main Stage (Building 11A) \nIn-person tickets $20 \nLivestream Free\, Advanced Registration Required \n\nA Florida native\, Jim Stavridis attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis\, and spent 37 years in the Navy\, rising to the rank of 4-star Admiral. Among his many commands were four years as the 16th Supreme Allied Commander at NATO\, where he oversaw operations in Afghanistan\, Libya\, Syria\, the Balkans\, and counter piracy off the coast of Africa. He also commanded US Southern Command in Miami\, charged with military operations through Latin America for nearly three years. He was the longest-serving Combatant Commander in recent US history. Following his military career\, he served for five years as the 12th Dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. \n\nIn the course of his career in the Navy\, he served as senior military assistant to the Secretary of the Navy and the Secretary of Defense. He led the Navy’s premier operational think tank for innovation\, Deep Blue\, immediately after the 9/11 attacks. Admiral Stavridis was promoted directly from 1-star rank to 3- star rank in 2004. \n\nHe won the Battenberg Cup for commanding the top ship in the Atlantic Fleet and the Navy League John Paul Jones Award for Inspirational leadership\, along with more than 50 US and international medals and decorations\, including 28 from foreign nations. He also commanded a Destroyer Squadron and a Carrier Strike Group\, both in combat. \n\nIn 2016\, he was vetted for Vice President by Secretary Hillary Clinton\, and subsequently invited to Trump Tower to discuss a cabinet position with President Donald Trump. \n\nHe earned a PhD from The Fletcher School at Tufts\, winning the Gullion prize as outstanding student in his class in 1983\, as well as academic honors from the National and Naval War Colleges as a distinguished student. DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-week class on Thursdays\, November 6\, 13\, 20 December 4   7-9 pm \nThis class is being offered to ages 12 and up! \n$100 non- members $80.00 members \nInstructor: Joseph Rogine \nThese classes are designed for both beginning to advanced students who want to sharpen their skills in drawing. \nI have taught students for over 25 years who have never picked up a pencil to draw to those who have been quite advanced. \nIt is an academic course\, (academic being defined as that which can be taught). \nDrawings are created by copying master drawings\, simple to complex still-life objects and classical plaster casts. \nThe student usually begins by copying a master drawing that is supplied to them. \nAll students start out using graphite pencils with grades of 2H HB 2B. \nThe capabilities and limitations of drawing materials and drawing instruments are discussed at length along with their proper handling. Classes are essentially about learning how to see nature and the world as an artist sees it\, through the language and medium of drawing. \nThe student’s eye will gradually become trained and sensitive on how to compose a layout on the page\, assessing proportion\, elementary perspective\, gauge angles\, identify shapes\, access the degree of curvature of forms\, locate hidden movements and linear rhythms\, the structure and modeling of form and the study of light and shade. \nThis opens a whole new world towards a visual literacy that was very common in school curricula 100 to 150 years ago. \nDepending on a students’ progress and particular interest repeat students are free to experiment with various drawing mediums like charcoal\, pastel pencil\, pen and ink etc.\, along with the drawing surfaces applicable to their chosen medium. Her recitals have taken her to Carnegie Hall\, Worcester’s Mechanics Hall\, the Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago\, Merkin Hall in NYC to note highlights.
