SUMMARY:Rethinking Greed and Wealth in Modern Society with Paul Vigna
DESCRIPTION:Join journalist Paul Vigna for an eye-opening conversation about his provocative new book\, The Almightier: \nHow Money Became God\, Greed Became Virtue\, and Debt Became Sin\, during a virtual discussion at 2 p.m. Wednesday\, November 11\, presented by the Ocean County Library. \nHow did money go from a tool of commerce into the dominant faith of modern society? \nIn The Almightier\, Vigna will take readers on a sweeping historical journey from Renaissance Florence to today’s global financial markets\, revealing how wealth accumulation evolved from a moral failing into an unspoken civic virtue. \nHe uncovers the forgotten history of money\, tracing the uneasy and often accidental alliance between wealth and religion as it developed from ancient city-states to today’s secular world\, where religious devotion has receded and greed has stepped in to fill the void. \nThrough engaging anecdotes\, original research\, and fresh perspectives on the causes of the many challenges we face today\, Vigna makes a compelling argument that money has no power apart from the power we give it. \nWhether you are interested in economic history\, personal finance\, or the hidden cultural forces shaping modern life\, this talk is sure to pique your interest. \nPaul Vigna is an author\, journalist\, editor\, and speaker with a focus on capital markets and cryptocurrencies. \nHe is the author of Guts: The Anatomy of the Walking Dead and The Truth Machine. For 25 years he was an editor and reporter for Dow Jones Newswires and the Wall Street Journal\, pioneering coverage of the cryptocurrency sector. He has appeared on CNN\, CNBC\, MSNBC\, Fox\, and PBS. \nOcean County Library cardholders can borrow The Almightier for free. \nVisit tinyurl.com/AlmightierOCL\, or call or visit your local OCL branch to request a copy today. \nRegistration is required for this free program. \nTo register\, visit tinyurl.com/VignaOCL\, call 732-349-6200\, or stop by your local OCL branch. \ntinyurl.com/VignaOCL \n

SUMMARY:Waves of Hope: The Inspirational Story of Agnes Negra
DESCRIPTION:BRICK – During World War II\, a tech-savvy New Jersey woman took it upon herself to be a priceless information provider for families of captured U.S. service members. \nAgnes Joan Negra’s exploits are chronicled in the book Waves of Hope. \nMeet her son Ronald Edward Negra\, the author\, at the Brick Branch of the Ocean County Library at 11 a.m. Saturday\, November 14. \nRonald and his wife Valerie will discuss his mother’s inspirational tale\, lovingly written from her own vivid recollections in Waves of Hope\, available at the Ocean County Library. \nThen as now\, parents\, spouses\, children\, and relatives sought any information they could find about their men and women in uniform – whether they were safe\, or even alive. \nThis newly married wife and mother was no different. Her husband August suffered wounds in the Battle of the Bulge and was Missing in Action. \nSitting by her shortwave radio in her Nutley home\, Agnes monitored Radio Berlin’s nightly recitation of captured US military members. \nShe sought news of her husband – but listened for more than that. \nShe began notating all the names. \nThen she personally contacted the families of each one by mail. Often\, her letters were the first word that families received. \nIn Ronald’s book\, she recounts the turmoil of families on the home front\, the spirit of hope they gained from her messages\, and the exhilaration of reuniting with her husband. \nThis v book is much more than a written history. It contains copies of the letters that Agnes received from families she had written to. \nThe result is an astonishing and deeply moving story of kindness and hope. \nAutographed copies of Waves of Hope will be available for purchase following the program. \nRonald\, a retired medical executive born and raised in Nutley\, traced his family’s past in the 2004 book\, The History of the Verdi Family: Celebrating 100 Years in America. \nHe also authored a biography of his father\, August E. Negra. CBS News and News12 New Jersey aired interviews with Rona \ntinyurl.com/BrickHopeOCL \n732-477-4513
