Confidence comes from experience. Experience comes from practice and experimentation. And, of course, the most important is knowledge. That is what we all gather day after day and will point the way to successful painting!
- Learning to edit: simplifying in big shapes, capturing the essence of a scene:
Ask yourself, “Where do I want to look in this painting”, and focus on the greatest contrast, sharpest edge, and most detail in that area.
- Capturing light and shade by connecting your shadow shapes:
Seek out the shadow patterns and connect them to achieve a bold design. This way your painting can be read from a distance.
- Putting down the paint with confidence:
Once you have a good design, you can put down your colors boldly and with confidence. I will show you how to create a luminous glow with simple glazes. I will also emphasize the importance of good brushstrokes and the difference they can make in a painting.
I will give a brief demo (25-30 minutes) to show how I would approach a simple subject. I will go around to each person and make suggestions to help them with their chosen subject matter.
After the lunch break, if time permits, I will then do a second demo (25-30 minutes) focusing on shadow shapes and colors.
At the end of each painting day, we could have a brief critique of each person’s painting.
