Powerful Pastels in Still Lives, Figures and Interiors

Day 1- Underpainting Techniques and Values

We will start with some exercises to familiarize ourselves with different types of paper and pastel sticks, observing their interactions on various surfaces.

We will also experiment with new underpainting techniques.

It would be helpful to bring some alcohol and a brush and/or watercolor if you wish to explore underpainting further.

Also a value chart if you have one.   We will focus on still life objects, allowing you to experiment with different techniques on the same subjects.

You are welcome to adjust your easel for varied perspectives.

Day 2 – Figures in Motion

Be mindful that captivating scenes surround us in everyday life.

I will provide photographs depicting these moment, but you are encouraged to bring your own photographs if you have captured any interesting life scenes.

Building on what we learned on day 1, students can start with an underpainting to outline your artwork or make that decision spontaneously, depending on the direction the  painting suggests.
