” April Fools’ Day—occurring on April 1 each year—has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, though its exact origins remain a mystery. April Fools’ Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools!” at the end to clue in the subject of the April Fools’ Day prank. While its exact history is shrouded in mystery, the embrace of April Fools’ Day jokes by the media and major brands has ensured the unofficial holiday’s long life. ” April Fools’ Day: Origins, Meaning & Hoaxes | HISTORY

✨⭐️Today is National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day! Today & every day we celebrate all of our Ocean County “Mom & Pop’ Businesses! ⭐️✨
⭐️Meet The Shoemaker Family of Lavallette Hardware located in Lavallette! ⭐️
The Shoemaker Family has been in the hardware business in one way or another for years. The passion began in the 1960’s when Bob, started at a hardware store in Ridgewood & eventually working as a hardware distributor. Bob’s son began working at the hardware store in 1994.
⭐️What brought the family & business to Ocean County? ⭐️
The family had a summer home in Lavallette, and in 2001 purchased @Lavallette Hardware, they relocated full time to Lavallette which made perfect sense as they started their new venture & the rest is history!
The family says that the best part of being a ” Mom & Pop” Business is, is getting to know their community & locals. They have the ability to cater to the needs and issues of the small island community. It gives them the ability to specialize in items that are needed locally which sets them apart from the big box retailers.
On any given day, you can see Bob, Betty, Randy, & family working hard at the store that so many have come to love.
⭐️What does the family love about Ocean County? ⭐️
The family history in Ocean County is almost 100 years! Since the 1930’s! Randy added, ” My grandmother’s family had a place in Seaside Heights. my father has been coming to Lavallette since he was a child and my mother’s family has ties to Ocean Grove, and I have been coming here since I was born.”
💙The family is always willing to support the community & local grade school too!
Just one of the many reasons to #shopsmallbusiness
Did you know that small businesses donate 250% more than large businesses to local nonprofits and community causes, creating a positive cycle of giving back locally.
Thank you for sharing your story with Ocean County Tourism ! Get out there and #supportlocal !
Happy National Mom & Pop Business Owners! You are the backbone to our community!

New Funding Opportunity for Small Business Innovation Research Program Phase II
Deadline to apply: Tuesday, March 5, 2024
ACL’s National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) is announcing a new funding opportunity for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.
The purpose of the federal SBIR program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector, strengthen the role of small business in meeting federal research or research and development (R&D) needs, and improve the return on investment from federally funded research for economic and social benefits to the nation. NIDILRR’s SBIR program goal is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through R&D products generated by small businesses and to increase the commercial application of NIDILRR-supported research results and R&D products. All SBIR projects funded by NIDILRR must address the needs of individuals with disabilities and promote their health and function, community living, or employment outcomes.
The objective of Phase II is to continue the research or R&D effort initiated in Phase I with approaches that exhibit potential for commercial application. SBIR Phase I grantees who successfully completed their Phase I grant in fiscal years 2022, 2023, or 2024 are eligible to apply. Phase I grantees with funding from NIDILRR or another agency are eligible to apply as long as their applications describe research projects that aim to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Applicants must also continue to meet the criteria of small business concerns. Phase II awards are for periods up to two years.

Meet Justin Hurley and Matt Moscatelli , Featured Photographers at North Hall Gallery, Point Pleasant Beach!
Justin Hurley – Hello! I am a photographer based out of New Jersey. I have been passionate about photography for over 4 years now and have gained a lot of knowledge about it. I love nature photography, Landscape photography,
pr
These are what I spend most of my time doing and improving upon. However, I still enjoy other types of photography that I have not mentioned.
I am 17 years old and currently attend Point Boro High School. Photography is one of the many things that I enjoy doing with my time and strive to get better at. Thank you for taking an interest in my work! I hope photography leaves the same impact on you as it has on me.
My name is Matt Moscatelli, and I am 30 years old, born and raised in New Jersey. I am a full-time Registered Nurse, but my days off consist of planning trips to explore this beautiful planet we call home. I am just a guy who became very addicted to traveling, and somewhere along the way, I picked up a camera. I have become a part-time photographer, searching for nature’s magical moments, attempting to capture them through my lens. I am passionate about landscapes, night photography, and seascapes. When I started up with photography I remember feeling as if I was this free spirit.
Photography helped me see how beautiful the world around us truly is. It taught me how to value and appreciate those small, yet beautiful moments that most people go through their entire lives without even noticing. Laying under the stars, and watching the sky burst into all different shades of pink, purple, orange, and yellow – these are the moments that make me feel most alive. I hope some of these moments I have captured and displayed here today can leave you with a similar feeling as it has left me with.

🧼Meet Thomas owner of Savvy Fit Soaps in Ocean County🧼
“Why did you get into making natural skincare?” His answer may not surprise you; “FRUSTRATION”
“As a new dad combing through the aisle of “natural” bath and body products, I was absolutely irritated to see how (to this day) natural has a VERY mixed meaning. I did something about it rather than complain.”
🧼Starting out, Savvy Fit Soaps had 3 soap bars that were inspired by a soap making chemist in Pennsylvania who taught Thomas a bit about the process, although she was using tallow (the fat of farm animals) Thomas aspired to create a plant-based brand, using only rich oils and butters, spa-like exfoliants, and truly active essential oils.
🧼The first 3 bars, though not yet named at the time, were what is now known as DEFENSE, MOMINTUM, and ZEST EVER. Soon after, MAGIC LOTION was created. Today, Savvy Fit Soaps has 11 total Soaps, 2 candles,2 moisturizers ,2 Deodorants, a Body Wash, &accessories.
🧼Though the Savvy Fit Soaps brand has really expanded in a short time, one of the things Thomas is most proud of is how the company really has become part of the Ocean County community. We’ve helped raise over $20,000 in 2023 for nonprofit organizations through fundraising (using the sale of our products), as well as through the sponsorship of over 100 non-profit events. Savvy Fit Soaps also takes a small roll in helping to give employment to the amazing members of @thearcocean .
“The wonderful people at The Arc label all our thousands of soap-savers. We look forward to the day that we get big enough that they are labeling 10s of 1000s of these for us regularly.”
🧼“Ocean County is a special place. There are many kinds of people and different kinds of natural landscapes. Although some of the towns are big, we all seem to be connected and know each other either directly or through a friend. Businesses like to work together and help each other, and people take pride in things that are “from Jersey.” – Thomas
