OCHD REMINDER: FREE POTASSIUM IODIDE (KI) PILL PROGRAM DISCOUNTINUED AFTER OYSTER CREEK SHUTDOWN

(Toms River) – The Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) is reminding residents that since the 2018 closure of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, the free potassium iodide (KI) pill program has been discontinued.

“With the Oyster Creek facility in Lacey Township shut down and nuclear energy no longer being generated, the recommendation for residents to continue to receive the KI pills is no longer necessary,” said Daniel Regenye, OCHD Public Health Coordinator/Health Officer. “Every once in a while we still receive a flurry of pill requests from residents that made it a good habit to stay up-to-date with their supply but we explain to them that the pills are no longer needed or available.”

The Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station opened in 1969 and a 10-mile radius of the facility was designated the Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ). The OCHD began the free KI pill program for residents living in EPZ in 2002 after concerns related to 9/11.

Potassium iodide, an ingredient found in table salt, can provide protection for the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine and can reduce the risk of thyroid cancer after a nuclear emergency.

“For residents who have expired or unwanted KI pills, they can easily dispose of them in the regular household trash,” Regenye added. “However, it’s important to know that you should never flush them down the toilet or otherwise put them in the water supply.”

To learn more about KI pill toxicity visit www.ochd.org. A list of prescription medication disposal sites located throughout Ocean County can also be found on the OCHD website.

We are raising funds to help cover the cost of food. Check in daily for behind-the-scenes photos and videos to learn about our animals’ diets and what it costs to simply feed our 200+ rescues.

New Safe Passing Law …

Posted: March 4, 2022

As we get closer to warmer weather, and the summer season, more people are out enjoying a bike ride, it’s important to be aware.

“The state’s new safe passing law goes into effect March 1. It requires drivers to provide at least 4 feet when passing vulnerable road users, like cyclists and joggers.

The law joins the move over law and crosswalk stop law, which require motorists to move over or slow down for first responders and stop for people crossing in crosswalks. The goal of all these laws is to reduce injuries and fatalities and prevent near misses.

The law takes effect after one of the deadliest years on New Jersey roads in decades, according to data from the New Jersey State Police. In 2021, 703 people were killed in crashes, including 222 pedestrians and 23 cyclists. It was the deadliest year on record for pedestrians in New Jersey since 1983 when 229 pedestrians were killed and the deadliest year for cyclists since 1999 when 24 cyclists were killed.

Last year’s terrifying trends seem to be continuing this year. As of February 21, there had been 79 fatal crashes resulting in 84 deaths. This includes 24 pedestrians.

The new law, signed by Governor Murphy in August, requires drivers to use “due caution” whenever they see a vulnerable roadway user, which includes people walking, running, biking, riding a scooter or in a wheelchair.

Drivers must move over one lane if possible. On a single-lane road, drivers must allow a f4-foot safety zone when passing. If they cannot provide 4 feet of space, they must slow down to 25 mph and be prepared to stop until they can safely pass without endangering those sharing the road.

Drivers who violate the law and cause bodily injury, face a $500 fine and two motor vehicle penalty points. If there is no bodily injury, the fine is $100.

Slowing down, moving over, and passing with care will prevent crashes and save lives.” – Point Pleasant Beach Police Department

Ocean County Special Needs Registry

Posted: March 2, 2022

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, Ocean County Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy and Ocean County Police Chiefs Association President Michael DiBella are proud to announce the launch of the Ocean County Special Needs Registry. Effective March 1, 2022, the Ocean County Special Needs Registry will be available to all citizens with special needs who reside, attend school or are employed in Ocean County. The goal of the Special Needs Registry is to ensure all Ocean County residents who may be in need of special assistance are able to get the help and support they need in a time of emergency or during interaction with Law Enforcement, Fire or EMS personnel.

Through the website, https://co.ocean.nj.us/OC/SpecialNeedsRegistry

which can be found at Ocean County residents will be able to register themselves or any family members living in their home who may have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities due to a physical and/or intellectual disability. The registry will provide first responders with vital information regarding a registrant’s special needs, emergency contact information, physical description, and current photograph. Information provided through registration is confidential and will only be shared with law enforcement and first responders during an emergency or for the purpose of planning an emergency response.

Each registrant will be provided with two window decals that can be placed on the front entrance of the registrant’s residence as well as on the window of any vehicle in which they regularly travel. The presence of the OCSNR decal signifies to first responders that someone in the residence or vehicle has some degree of special need and that they should respond accordingly. The use of the decals is voluntary.

Bonjour Ocean County !

Posted: January 13, 2022

The Lighthouse International Film Society is pleased to present the virtual screening of FRANCE-(French with English subtitles)- a new film by Bruno Dumont. Lea Seydoux primarily holds the center of Bruno Dumont’s unexpected new film, which starts out as a satire of contemporary news media before steadily spiraling out into something rich and darker. Set in contemporary Paris, FRANCE stars Seydoux as France de Meurs, a seemingly unflappable superstar TV journalist juggling her studio show, reporting on a distant war, and her rush of family life. Her high profile world is turned upside down after she injures a delivery man in a traffic accident, triggering a series of self-reckonings and a strange romance that proves impossible to shake. Never one to shy away from provoking his viewers, Dumont’s latest is tragicomic and deliciously ambivalent- a very 21st-century treatment of the difficulty of maintaining identity in a corrosive culture.

The Lighthouse International Film Society will have a VIRTUAL screening of Bruno Dumont’s FRANCE. Screen anytime from January 14- 31. If you are so inclined to have some French wine while watching, head over to Shell Liquor…they are offering 10% off of all French wines during the screening dates. And if you are interested in joining our French Wine, Cheese and Chat Happy Hour, meet us on Zoom on Sunday, Jan 30th from 5:00-6:00pm, link below!

Ocean County is home to New Egypt Flea Market Village & Auction. It was founded by Esler and Sandy Heller in 1959.

“In the late 1950’s, the town of New Egypt lost their local farmers market. Esler (Les) Heller had just returned from serving in the Navy and noticed that the vendors were looking for a new market. It was then that Mr. Heller decided to use the land near his home as a new venue for livestock auctions and produce sales. Soon after opening his new market in 1959, Mr. Heller added tables for second hand and antique sales and The New Egypt Flea Market Village was alive and thriving.” https://newegyptfleamarket.com/
